Search isn’t one place anymore.
That was the big idea running through Week 14 of The AI Search Briefing.
For more than two decades, businesses have built much of their online marketing around Google.
Get to Page One.
Reach the Top 3.
Get into the Google Maps Pack.
Those things still matter.
But AI Search is changing the landscape.
Customers now have more places to search, ask questions, discover businesses, and seek recommendations.
Here’s what we covered this week.
Day 1: Congratulations. Google Moved the Finish Line.
You finally reached Google’s Top 3.
You won the race.
Too bad Google moved the finish line.
Research comparing traditional Google Maps results with Google’s AI-powered local results showed that ranking prominently in one experience doesn’t necessarily guarantee the same visibility in another.
That’s an important mindset shift.
Traditional rankings still matter, but businesses also need to think about whether AI systems understand enough about them to surface or recommend them.
Day 2: The AI Search Wild West Land Grab
On Tuesday, we headed into the Wild West.
Research covered by Search Engine Journal suggested that nearly 90% of AI Search demand was occurring in categories without a clear dominant brand.
In other words:
AI hasn’t picked all of its winners yet.
Businesses have spent decades fighting over Google’s most valuable real estate.
Now another frontier is developing.
Businesses that build genuine authority, answer customer questions, create helpful content, strengthen their reputations, and clearly communicate what they do may have an opportunity to establish greater visibility as AI Search develops.
The AI Search land grab is underway.
Day 3: GOGB, Garbage Out, Garbage Buried
Wednesday brought perhaps the most prestigious acronym we’ve ever invented.
GOGB.
Garbage Out.
Garbage Buried.
Research from Ahrefs found that pages containing larger amounts of AI-generated content tended to rank somewhat lower.
That doesn’t mean Google automatically hates or penalizes content simply because AI helped create it.
The bigger lesson is about quality.
Google doesn’t need another thousand words of generic AI garbage simply because someone told you to publish another blog post.
Answer real questions.
Solve real problems.
Share useful information.
Use your actual experience and expertise.
And yes, use AI to help you organize and communicate that knowledge.
Otherwise, Google may toss that content into the Google kitty litter box and bury it before it starts to stink.
Meow.
Day 4: See Jane Ask ChatGPT
Then Dick and Jane discovered AI Search.
Sally uses Google.
Dick runs to Grok.
Jane asks ChatGPT.
See SEO agencies panic!
Okay, maybe that wasn’t in the original book.
But underneath the joke was an important lesson.
A customer looking for a dentist, carpet cleaner, realtor, restaurant, or another business no longer has to begin that journey with Google.
They can ask an AI platform.
Does that mean Google is dead?
Far from it.
Google is simply no longer the only front door.
Search didn’t disappear.
It went everywhere.
Day 5: What If Your Customer Never Googles You?
That brought us to Friday and perhaps the biggest question of Week 14.
What if your next customer never Googles you?
They don’t search for your website.
They don’t look through the Google Maps Pack.
They don’t type your business name into Google.
Instead, they open an AI platform and ask:
“Who’s the best company for what I need?”
Would AI know enough about your business to recommend you?
That’s a question businesses increasingly need to consider.
Your objective can no longer be only to convince Google that you deserve to rank on Page One or appear in the Maps Pack.
You need to create a clear and trustworthy online presence that helps people, search engines, and AI systems understand your business.
Build a Business the Internet Understands
That’s the Week 14 takeaway.
Don’t build an online presence that only Google understands.
Build a business the Internet understands.
Make it clear:
Who are you?
What do you do?
Where do you do it?
Are you good at it?
Why should someone trust you?
And ultimately:
Should you be recommended?
Search is changing quickly.
The individual platforms will change.
The technology will change.
Customer behavior will change.
But the fundamental goal remains remarkably simple.
Think Big! Be Trusted! Be Recommended!
