Caught in the April 2024 Google algorithm change? Here’s what to do.

Google’s Algorithm Changes & Search Engine Optimization

Back in April 2024 Google updated its search algorithm sending hundreds of thousands of websites into the Google Kitty Litter Box never to be seen again in a search. If you have not been keeping up with Google’s evolving SEO requirements for websites and updating your Google Business Profile (GBP), your website may have been buried.

So here’s what happened:

  1. Google’s Algorithm Changes: Google frequently updates its algorithm to enhance the quality of search results. When businesses and websites don’t stay current or make improvements, they risk falling behind as they may no longer meet Google’s evolving standards. Factors like website speed, mobile responsiveness, and overall user experience play a key role in these changes.
  2. Google Business Profile Optimization: If you have not been actively managing your Google Business Profile, this could explain your drop in visibility. Google tends to favor businesses that frequently post updates, receive fresh reviews, and engage with their audience. Lack of activity in these areas may negatively impact your search rankings.

Now, let’s talk about what to do:

  1. Website Update: You will need to start working on your website’s SEO. This means improving the content, speeding up the site, and making sure it’s mobile-friendly. Add fresh content, like service pages, and add blog posts at the very minimum 2 per month to show Google that the site is active and relevant.
  2. GBP Engagement: For your Google Business Profile, you need to start posting regular updates and encourage new customer reviews. Replying to your reviews and adding new photos will also help boost your rankings.
  3. Local SEO: You will need to focus on local SEO strategies. This includes making sure your business is listed consistently across different directories, getting backlinks from local sites, and ensuring your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) is correct everywhere online.
  4. Google Ads Strategy: Sometimes, launching a Google Ads campaign can be essential for generating more leads. However, it’s crucial to ensure the ads are properly targeted by using negative keywords to filter out irrelevant clicks. Additionally, refining location targeting can help better reach local customers and maximize the campaign’s effectiveness.

Following these steps should help bring your business back into Google’s spotlight and start generating leads again. While it won’t happen overnight, consistent effort will improve your visibility and get those phones ringing once again.
