Google Moved the Finish Line | The AI Search Briefing #68

Google Moved the Finish LineWhy the Maps 3-Pack Is No Longer Enough

Congratulations! Your business finally reached the Google Maps 3-Pack.

You won the race!

Too bad Google moved the finish line.

For years, local SEO had one primary objective: get your business into Google’s Top 3 local map results.

That coveted position could give a business greater visibility, more website visits, more telephone calls, and more opportunities to win new customers.

Ranking in the Google Maps 3-Pack is still important. But it may no longer be the final destination.

Google Maps and AI Mode May Recommend Different Businesses

According to a June 2026 study by Local SEO Data, Google’s AI Mode does not always recommend the same businesses that appear in the traditional local 3-Pack.

The study found a fair amount of overall overlap between the two sets of results. However, when researchers compared only the Top 3 businesses from each, the overlap dropped to 48%.

Think about what that means.

A business can rank in the Google Maps 3-Pack and still not appear among AI Mode’s Top 3 recommendations.

Conversely, a business that does not occupy one of the traditional Top 3 map positions may still have an opportunity to be recommended by AI.

The two systems are related, but they do not always produce the same answers.

AI Mode Is Not Simply Copying Traditional Rankings

Google’s AI Mode is not merely duplicating the traditional search results and presenting them in a conversational format.

It must determine which businesses are appropriate for the user’s specific question.

To make that decision, an AI system needs to understand:

  • What the business does
  • Which services it provides
  • Who it serves
  • Where it operates
  • What experience and expertise it possesses
  • What evidence supports its claims
  • Why customers trust it
  • Whether information about the business is consistent across multiple sources

This is about more than visibility.

It is about confidence.

Does AI clearly understand your business? Can it verify your claims? Does it have enough evidence to trust your business over another option?

Most importantly, does it have enough confidence to recommend you?

Traditional SEO Still Matters

This does not mean that traditional SEO or Google Maps optimization is dead.

Far from it.

Strong organic rankings, an optimized Google Business Profile, accurate business information, relevant service pages, customer reviews, local authority, and consistent citations can all contribute to visibility and credibility.

Those signals can also help AI systems understand the business.

Traditional SEO can still help a business get seen. But visibility alone does not guarantee an AI recommendation.

That is the new finish line.

Businesses Must Prepare for Two Types of Search

If your entire local marketing strategy is focused exclusively on reaching the top of Google Maps, you may be preparing for yesterday’s race.

Businesses now need to prepare for both traditional search rankings and AI-generated recommendations.

That means creating a clear and consistent digital presence across your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles, directories, reviews, videos, articles, and other trusted sources.

It also means answering the questions prospective customers are asking.

Your website should clearly explain what you do, who you help, where you work, what makes you different, and why customers should trust you.

The businesses that succeed in AI Search will be the ones that give AI enough reliable information to say:

“This is the business I recommend.”

The Bottom of the Bottom Line

The Google Maps 3-Pack remains valuable, but it is no longer the only finish line.

Your business needs traditional SEO to improve visibility and AI Search optimization to improve understanding, trust, credibility, and recommendations.

You must prepare for both AI Search and traditional SEO to remain competitive.
