See Jane SearchSee Jane Ask ChatGPT: Search Isn’t One Place Anymore

See Sally search.
Sally uses Google.
See Dick search.
Dick runs to Grok.
See Jane search.
Jane asks ChatGPT.
See SEO agencies panic!
Okay, maybe that last one wasn’t in the original book.
But here’s the point.
For more than two decades, when someone needed a dentist, carpet cleaner, realtor, restaurant, or just about any other local business or service, marketers had a pretty good idea where that search would begin.
Google.
Businesses spent years trying to reach Page One.
Then local businesses fought for visibility in the Google Maps Pack.
Then Voice Search became another consideration.
But now something much bigger is happening.

Jane May Never Go to Google

Imagine Jane wants to whiten her teeth.
Instead of opening Google and searching:
dentist teeth whitening
she opens ChatGPT and asks:
“Who’s the best dentist for whitening teeth?”
Dick might ask Grok.
Sally might still use Google.
Someone else might ask Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, or another AI-powered platform.
That’s a fundamental change for businesses.
Your potential customer isn’t necessarily searching in one place anymore.

Google Isn’t Dead

Whenever search behavior changes, someone inevitably announces:
“SEO IS DEAD!”
No.
And Google isn’t dead either.
Google remains enormously important to online visibility, especially for local businesses.
What’s changing is that Google is no longer the only front door through which someone might discover a business.
Traditional search results are now part of a much larger discovery ecosystem that can include AI assistants, answer engines, maps, videos, social platforms, reviews, directories, and other sources.

Search Didn’t Disappear. It Went Everywhere.

That’s the mindset shift.
For years, a business owner could reasonably ask:
“How do I get my company to rank higher on Google?”
That’s still an important question.
But it’s no longer the only question.
Businesses increasingly need to ask:
“Can the platforms my customers use understand who we are, what we do, where we do it, and why someone should choose us?”
That’s where AI Search Optimization becomes important.

Your Business Needs to Tell a Clear Story

Your website still matters.
Your Google Business Profile still matters.
Your reviews matter.
Your service pages matter.
Your videos matter.
Your social presence matters.
Your expertise matters.
Mentions of your business across the web can matter.
These pieces collectively create information about your business that people, search engines, and various AI systems may encounter.
That does not mean every AI platform uses the same sources or evaluates businesses the same way.
They don’t.
That’s precisely why businesses should stop thinking about their online presence as something built exclusively for one search engine.
The objective is to create a clear, accurate, useful, and consistent digital presence.

Be Found Where Your Customers Are Looking

Sally might use Google.
Dick might ask Grok.
Jane might ask ChatGPT.
Tomorrow, they may use something we haven’t even heard of yet.
The platforms will continue changing.
The underlying business objective doesn’t.
You want potential customers to find accurate information about your business.
You want them to trust what they find.
And when an AI system is asked for a recommendation, you want it to have enough reliable information to understand why your business may belong in the answer.
Google isn’t going away.
It’s just no longer the only front door.
Search didn’t disappear.
It went everywhere.
Think Big! Be Trusted! Be Recommended!
