E-I-E-I-S-E-O | The AI Search Briefing #17

E-I-E-I-SEO!
For more than two decades, SEO has largely revolved around one question:
How do we get found on Google?
Businesses optimized websites.
They created service pages.
They targeted keywords.
They built links.
Local businesses optimized their Google Business Profiles and fought for visibility in the Google Maps Pack.
And those things still matter.
But the search landscape is getting a whole lot bigger.

Your Customers Have More Places to Search

Today, someone looking for a business doesn’t necessarily have to begin with a traditional Google search.
They can ask ChatGPT.
They can use Gemini.
They can ask Claude.
They can go to Grok or Perplexity.
And the experience is different.
Instead of typing a few keywords and receiving a page filled with links, people can ask conversational questions such as:
“Who is the best company for this?”
“Which business would you recommend?”
“Who provides this service in my area?”
That’s where traditional SEO begins overlapping with AI Search Optimization.

SEO Isn’t Dead

Every few years somebody announces:
“SEO IS DEAD!”
Nope.
Search engines still need to understand websites. Customers still use Google. Google Maps still matters tremendously for local businesses. Helpful content, technically sound websites, clear service pages, authority, reputation, and accurate business information still matter.
But SEO is evolving.
The objective isn’t simply to convince one search engine that a particular webpage deserves a particular ranking.
Businesses increasingly need to create an online presence that can be understood by people, traditional search engines, and AI-powered systems.

Make Your Business Easy to Understand

Whatever platform your customer uses, there are some basic questions that should be easy to answer:
Who are you?
What do you do?
Where do you do it?
Why should someone trust you?
What makes your business different?
Are you good at what you do?
If your website says one thing, your Google Business Profile says another, your social profiles are outdated, and your services aren’t clearly explained, you’re making that job more difficult.
A strong online presence should tell a consistent story about your business.

From SEO to AI Search

SEO isn’t being replaced overnight.
It’s expanding.
Businesses still want to rank in Google.
They still want visibility in Google Maps.
But now there’s another question to ask:
When someone asks an AI platform about the products or services you provide, does that platform understand enough about your business to include you in the conversation?
That’s why we’re paying attention to AI Search.
The platforms may change.
The technology will certainly change.
But the objective remains pretty simple:
Be found. Be trusted. Be recommended.
And if Old MacDonald had a website today?
Well…
